Anger Explanation~In this abstract artwork I used my idea of anger as an emotion that builds up, I used a shape that started small and got bigger and more chaotic. I used black in the centre to suggest the start of the emotion and also because "black is the colour of authority and power" and can also imply submission which can cause anger. I also used red because its "the most emotionally intense colour, red stimulates a faster heartbeat and breathing" also associated with anger. Along with using a shape that starts of small and gets bigger, I used blocks of colour at the side to depict a spilling out but also controlled feeling for the viewer. I added elements of brown, as "brown can be sad and wistful" and splashes of orange to connect all the colours. I used the website www.infoplease.com as a resource for my colour theory. Calm Explanation~In this abstract piece I used what I relate to the feeling of calm most with, being the ocean. I tried to use the shape of a wave to convey the emotion of relaxation. I used the background colour of white as 'white reflects light and is considered a summer colour' and summer is also associated with the feeling. I used different shades of blue within the wave because ' peaceful, tranquil blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals, so it is often used in bedrooms'. I used simplicity in this design because the emotion of calm is not complex.I used the website http://www.infoplease.com/spot/colors1.html for my colour theory. Excitement Explanation~In this abstract artwork I used many different colours within bubbles to convey my idea of excitement, as excitement can make you feel many different emotions. I started with smaller bubbles that got bigger and start to connect together with the progression of the emotion. I mainly used the colour pink as "this colour can be used to lessen irritation and aggression as it is connected with feelings of love". I also used yellow because "similarly to orange, yellow is a happy and uplifting colour". I used the website http://library.thinkquest.org/27066/psychology/nlcolorpsych.html for my colour theory. |

#6. "Don't count your chickens, until they've hatched"~1920x1080 RGB 72 ppi
In this composite I used a situation I went though recently counting on a pre approval for a loan from a bank to obtain items I thought I needed to create the perfect picture. I used the frame containing items I would of purchased if successful.

#5. "The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence"~1920x1080 px RGB 72 ppi
In this composite I used how I imagine my life to be once I am educated and employed by using images of a successful woman providing for her family by doing what she loves for a living. I used myself with a white picket fence to divide what I have and what I want, the greener. I incorporated other elements to continue with the theme.

#4. "When it rains, it pours"~1920x1080 px 72 ppi
After exploring web definitions I related all idioms to my own life. My idea was to express this concept though what I have learnt from composites one and two, by putting myself into a composite. I used my own situation to convey the theme by using raindrops containing symbols, and me holding an umbrella needed for the overwhelming amount.

Logos and Buisness Cards/Illustrator
In this exercise we were asked to find two logos and two business cards, one design we like and one we don't and discuss why and how as a designer we would rework it.
My first business card is from a short stay self contained accommodation from my home town. What I liked about the card initially was the design of the horse and the number eight. After that it gets to congested with information which doesn't need to be there. The space between the image of the horse and information is too big. I would alter this design by incorporating the horse and the roman numerals together and shorting the information to just the address and website.
The second business card I found was for a local hairdressing business in Wagga. What I liked about the card straight off was the fact that its double sided and laminated which makes it more versatile and durable. The front side has just the name of the business with little graphic which looks like hair and ties in well with the business. On the back of the card is the address and a space to the right side of the card for your next appointment time, this is tilted slightly. Overall this card works because its simple and effective.

Design Breif For Cactus TV
I have been asked to design a logo for a new free to air comedy channel, Cactus TV.
The channel is aimed at both children and adults. The client indicates that the comedy channel logo because its simple and vibrant, but would like to steer away from purple.
The client would also like two different logos, one for the children time slot and one for the adults time slot.
This logo will be displayed mainly on television but has to work for a broad range of media. Also the client would like to see a watermark of the logo.

3 ads!
For this exercise I chose three of my favourite fashion brands and explored their websites to see there use of principles of design..........
The first ad I looked at was volcom.com, the homepage has unity with the layout. Rectangles to the left of screen with latest info of sponsored riders in different divisions and smaller rectangles to the right with featured videos. There is variety around Volcom logo of text and pictures with a newspaper cut and paste effect. Most dominance is the main rectangle below Volcom logo which consistently changes images of latest info.
The second ad I looked was at oneteaspoon.com.au, the homepage has unity in the images as they are all black and white. There is variety within the images even though all images are black and white they are all very different images but relate to text above. The hierarchy of the website is in the order of the different functions. The dominance for me is how different all the images are even though they are all the same size and in rows of three, the difference dominates.
The third ad I looked at was at wheelsanddollbaby.com, there is variety in size and font type. Unity in the colour pink which also dominates website. The hierarchy is the image of a red head modelling the latest dress from the collection. The dress in this image is printed flowers in pastels, so the colour of the models hair makes the image pop!
Answers to questions!
1. What are the primary principles of design according to your notes?
Primary principles are unity, variety, hierarchy, dominance, proportion and balance.
2. Find 5 logos of popular companies and describe them with reference to the primary principles of design.
This logo combines unity in text and variety in colour and shape. There is proportion in text size and the flower design and the dominance is the colour. The hierarchy is the bold and different sized text of Chupa Chups symbol.
The Atari logo has unity with its black and white font and unity with its symbol being the same width as the word Atari. The hierarchy of the logo is the A design which dominates two thirds of the whole logo. There is proportion in the size of the font and balance of the A design.
The Converse logo has unity and variety in its text size and colour. The hierarchy is the star shape and the circle, the dominance is also the star and the red converse all star text, there is balance in the circle from the center star.
3. What are the differences between symmetric and asymmetric balance as it relates to graphic design?
Symmetric balance is elements arranged the same or similar on either side of a central axis, and asymmetric balance is the art of creating balance using uneven numbers, sizes and kinds of elements.
4. Describe the golden rectangle and what its use is?
The golden rectangle is constructed starting with a square, then find centre of square by drawing intersecting lines through opposite corners. Then a vertical line is drawn through the intersecting point, then a compass is placed where the centre line intersects the base of the square and an arc intersects the top right corner of the square and extends to the squares baseline. The use of the golden rectangle is to help designers organize and arrange elements in a composition.
5. What is a tangible element of design and how does it differ to a conditional one?
Shape, space, line, texture and type are tangible elements. Colour, value, size and volume are elements that are conditional.
Primary principles are unity, variety, hierarchy, dominance, proportion and balance.

The hello Kitty logo has unity in its colour scheme of red, white and yellow. Variety in the layout of Kitty's face and features. Hierarchy of text describing brand name and dominance of red bow and text aiming at females. The Atari logo has unity with its black and white font and unity with its symbol being the same width as the word Atari. Second Day
Today was drawing with Mr Dave which I really enjoyed, but my drawing needs alot of work! During this class I discovered I have a nemesis, a person who for some strange reason gets right under my skin.
First day
Well today is my first day which should actually be my second! Today was quite relaxed and fun, I am one of nine in my class, and one of three girls!
My teacher is Mr Luke who is a really cool teacher and I am looking forward to the rest of the year. We worked in teams of three to create two design concepts for beer marketed at women and hair removal for men. I enjoyed this exercise as it introduced me to class mates D and J.
